With the constant buzz going ’round about the recent earthquakes and tsunamis in the Pacific and Caribbean, my lense pointed down the other day to find these micro-faults in the pavement. I’m not sure if it was a subconscious effect of over-stimulation or a deeply felt compassion; maybe it was both.

Either way, I am fascinated by the way mother nature lifts, pushes and gnarls at the structures of our man-made existence, as if to scoff at their feeblenesses. Nature has a way of giving us a wake-up call.

I also simply enjoyed the textures of the ground, the cracks, and the dirt and other natural remains that filled them.

These photographs were taken on the edge of Vienna, in Simmering, at the Zentralfriedhof.
